A fundamental rethink of the socio-economic system requires a refocusing the aims of our activities in the economic, social, and political domains. Economies and polities are meant to serve society, not the other way around. Serving society means rewarding activities that promote the wellbeing of people in thriving communities and penalizing activities that undermine societies and the natural world. For this purpose, a new paradigm for economics is one that enables us to view the economy as more than the sum of decentralized, individualistic pursuits, but also to understand the importance of participation in collective endeavors to tackle collective problems. A new paradigm for business is one that turns business competition in the pursuit of profit into a force that sustains not only economic prosperity, but social and environmental prosperity as well.
