Global Solutions Summit 2023: Harnessing Technology to Multiply the Positive Impacts of Agriculture

Topics:
Summit 2023
This session is curated by Bayer. Agriculture is the backbone of global food systems and the bioeconomy, a major source of income for many, including the world’s poorest, and a key lever in nature conservation, biodiversity and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. It is a major factor in the development of economies in the Global South. However, if not managed carefully, agricultural practices can have far-reaching adverse effects on people and the planet, such as contributing to global warming and environmental degradation, or aggravating economic inequality. Without sustainable, equitable and resilient agriculture, we will not be able to achieve the SDGs, mitigate climate change or promote sustainable economic growth. These intersections demonstrate why agriculture is a critical area of focus for addressing many of the world’s most pressing challenges and creating a more stable and prosperous world for all. Thanks to major leaps in science and technology, the digital transformation holds enormous potential to drive positive change. Precision farming, climate-smart agriculture, big data and AI as well as supply chain management are revolutionizing agricultural practice. To successfully make use of the many opportunities, it is critical to make the transition equitable and inclusive, ensuring that the benefits are widely distributed and accessible to all. The session will discuss policy approaches and priorities as well as the supporting role of business and civil society in exploiting the full potential of agricultural innovation as a key enabler of positive change.
