The annual event provides recommendations on the key challenges facing the G20 and comes at a watershed created by the coronavirus pandemic
Berlin, May, 27th 2021 – The Global Solutions Summit kicked off on Thursday as a “rallying cry” for fundamental system change and comes at a “historical watershed” created by the coronavirus pandemic, Global Solutions Initiative President Dennis Snower said.
The two-day event brings together representatives from politics, academia, business and civil society to discuss the key issues on the agenda of the G20 network of major economies, such as health, recovery from the pandemic, climate change, digital governance and integrating refugees.
The summit’s main theme, the Great Realignment, “aims for an economic prosperity that is compatible with environmental sustainability, social solidarity and personal agency,” Snower told the opening address. “We must recouple our political, economic, ecological and social systems with the wellbeing of people and planet.”
Italy, which holds the G20 presidency this year, “embraces the concept of realignment” with its focus on people, planet and prosperity, according to Paolo Magri, chair of the T20, the think tank network of the G20, in Italy.
He said the G20’s current most urgent agenda issues include the pandemic and the unequal distribution of the Covid-19 vaccine.
“We cannot talk about realignment if we still have disalignment on health issues, and health disalignment means economic disalignment,” Magri told the opening plenary.

Notes to the Editors
The Global Solutions Summit 2021 will take a hybrid virtual and in-person format due to the Corona pandemic this year. In the studio, which will be set up in-house at the Berlin European School of Management Technology (ESMT), participants from all over the world will be connected with moderators and speakers who will attend in person from the studio. A digital platform will allow all participants not only to follow the presentations and discussions, but also to exchange ideas with other attendees. “The appeal of the physical Summit has always been the ability to meet face-to-face with many like-minded people. It is exceedingly important to us that much of this can also take place in the digital space,” stresses Dennis J. Snower.
