Joint Press Release of the Global Solutions Initiative and the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE)

Global Solutions Initiative and German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) take over Chair of the G7 Think Tank Group

Official mandate of German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the context of the German G7 Presidency 2022

Berlin/Bonn, 12 October 2021 – The Global Solutions Initiative (GSI) and the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) will co-chair the T7 Group during Germany’s G7 Presidency in 2022. Chancellor Angela Merkel has now mandated the two organizations to carry out the T7 process. In the T7 group, leading think tanks from the G7 countries work together with civil society and business to develop proposals for forward-looking agreements between the G7 member states.

“We thank the German Chancellor for the trust she has placed in us. We are pleased to jointly support the G7 process in a scientific advisory capacity in order to develop proposals for solutions to some of the most pressing problems at the multilateral level for policy makers, business leaders, civil society representatives and scientific experts in the G7 countries. The scientific exchange contributes to strengthening the distinctive but complementary roles of the G7 and G20 in the spirit of multilateralism,” said Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Director of the DIE and Prof. Dr. Dennis Snower, President of the GSI.

A series of international workshops and conferences is planned on the big topics such as combating the climate crisis, health issues, economic recovery after the Covid19 pandemic, the future of the infrastructure programme announced in Carbis Bay, the protection of personal data in the digital space and cooperation with Africa. The Global Solutions Initiative has gained a great deal of experience in these areas, among other things through its annual Global Solutions Summit. The German Development Institute is contributing its worldwide networks to the cooperation, including the Managing Global Governance Academy, which brings together young leaders from government institutions, think tanks and research institutions, civil society and the private sector in emerging economies in the South and Europe, as well as the T20 Africa Standing Group, which links more than 30 leading think tanks from Africa and the G20 countries.
