Prof. Dr. Daniela Schwarzer is executive director for Europe and Eurasia of the Open Society Foundations. From 2016 to 2021, she directed the German Council on Foreign Relations of which she now is a non-executive board member. She is also a non-executive board member of BNP Paribas. She holds an honorary professorship of Freie Universität Berlin where she teaches courses on European integration and international affairs and she is a senior fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center. She served on the executive team of the German Marshall Fund of the United States. Prior to working at the fund, Schwarzer worked at the German Institute for International and Security Affairs. She has been a special advisor to European leaders such as EU High Representative Josep Borrell and to countries including Poland and France during the preparation of their EU Council presidencies. She has ample international and change management as well as advisory experience including non-profits and public entities. She is a regular public speaker and focuses on European and international affairs, the future of democracy, multilateralism, political and financial risk, as well as leadership. Her biggest question now is how Europe can best deal with the challenges and opportunities of digitization and tech change and how public policy making, business, think tanks, academia will need to change to support forward-looking decision-making, liberal societies, democracy, environmental sustainability and competitiveness. She has studied and worked in Germany, France, the US, the UK and Italy.”
