Amara Phillips
Junior Program Manager
Amara graduated with her dual master’s degrees from the Munk School of Global Affairs and Public Policy in Toronto and the Hertie School of Governance in Berlin, Germany. She completed a master of global affairs with specializations in human rights and development at the former and a master of international affairs at the latter with a specialization in international security. Before this, she completed her Bachelor of Arts at the University of Toronto with a double major in political science and ethics, and a minor in Spanish and Portuguese.
Amara wrote her master’s thesis on the inequity within the Canadian migration system toward Sub-Saharan African migrants. She also conducted a research project identifying the gaps in circular economy research and implementation within the informal markets in the Global South. Amara wrote her bachelor’s thesis on the school-to-prison pipeline, looking at anti-Black racism in Canadian school systems toward Black girls. Her professional aspirations include work in human rights, development, and advocacy for marginalized populations.
Before joining the Global Solutions Initiative team, Amara worked as a research assistant for the Global Summitry Project in Toronto, Canada, where she is originally from.
