The inaugural summit on the Foundations of Values and Value in the 21st Century takes place on January 23-24, 2023, at the Blavatnik School of Government at Oxford University. The summit will bring together leading academics, business leaders, policymakers, and politicians to discuss the foundation of values and value needed to address the global challenges, opportunities, and threats that we face in the 21st century.
The summit will comprise a mixture of conceptual issues of values and value delivered by leading academic thinkers from different disciplines in the humanities, social and life sciences. They will set the scene for discussions on three main themes of the summit – measurement, digital governance, and place-based regeneration.
The three themes will address very practical issues and major policy challenges. They will draw on research that is being undertaken in Oxford at the Blavatnik School of Government, the Oxford Internet Institute and the Saïd Business School, and in Germany at Fraunhofer IMW in Leipzig, Global Solutions in Berlin and the New Institute in Hamburg.
The first day of the Summit will focus on measurement and on digital governance, and the second day on place-based regeneration. Each session will start with abdescription of new ideas that are emerging on each topic based on research being undertaken in Oxford and Germany and will be followed by breakout sessions in which the ideas will be discussed by the academics, business leaders and policymakers present.
The summit will involve participants actively in the discussions. A short description of proposals on each of the topics will be circulated in advance so that participants will come prepared and able to contribute to discussions in an informed way.
The objective is to produce a final agreed statement of the views of participants on the three areas that will help to frame practice and policy formulation in years to come.
