Berlin, 12 September 2022 – The latest volume of the INTERSECTING global editorial project by the Global Solutions Initiative Foundation, ‘Bending the Linear Economy. On Urban Metabolism’, explores new solutions for sustainable urbanization and low carbon investments in times of crises.

The collection INTERSECTING was initiated in spring 2020 to develop new public policies in light of the COVID-19 pandemic and its social and economic impacts, in Europe and globally.

‘INTERSECTING – Bending the Linear Economy: On Urban Metabolism’ on released on the occasion of the G7 Germany Urban Development Ministers Meeting in Potsdam as well as the Future Forum, organized by the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ). It follows the Urban20 Summit, where the group of mayors of the G20 convened in Jakarta, Indonesia, between August 30 and September 1, 2022.

An extract from the G7 Leaders Communiqué released on June 28, 2022, reads:

“Cities are places of diversity and identity, exchange and integration, creativity, and solidarity. They are crucial to driving prosperity and ensuring opportunities for all.”

For the first time in the history of the G7, the presidency of Germany has recognized the importance of good urban governance to meet global challenges.

Addressing climate change and achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement are critical issues that go beyond the current geopolitical divides. This global challenge can only be met with local governments’ committed action, and by interconnecting climate and resources issues. “‘Doubling circularity in the economy could reduce greenhouse gas emissions by nearly 40% by 2030,” according to the Global Solutions Initiative.1 To meet ambitious but necessary net zero targets, cities, international financial institutions, research organizations and the private sector need to invent more inclusive forms of partnerships in fields such as waste, water and renewable energy.

‘INTERSECTING – Bending the Linear Economy: On Urban Metabolism’ proposes solutions to connect technological responses with the improvement to people’s well-being, including actors in the informal economy. More than 50 policymakers, researchers and civil society organizations from developed and emerging countries have contributed to the book, illustrated with rich and original photographs. INTERSECTING gathers more than 250 authors across all continents.

In preparation for the G7 Germany Urban Development Ministers Meeting in Potsdam, the Global Solutions Initiative has hosted high-level discussions with Minister Svenja Schulze (BMZ), the Mayor of Mannheim and President of the Global Parliament of Mayors, Peter Kurz, the President of the German Federal Environment Agency (UBA) Dirk Messner, the Managing Director of GIZ, Ingrid-Gabriela Hoven as well as representatives from the Association of German Cities (Deutscher Städtetag) and representatives from G20 Indonesia, Think20 Indonesia and the Asian Development Bank Institute at the Global Solutions Summit in March 2022 and at the Think7 summit in May, in Berlin. On August 30, 2022, Nicolas J.A. Buchoud, Fellow of the Global Solutions Initiative, organized the Urban20 special event, Urban Infrastructure for Circular Economy and a Just Transition, with the Governor of Jakarta, the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), the Indonesian Think20 engagement group, as well as Jakarta’s waste and water public companies.
