The forum was moderated by Dr. Dennis Görlich, researcher at the Kiel Institute for the World Economy and Program & Research Director at the Global Solutions Initiative.

Why circular economy?

To recouple social, economic and environmental prosperity globally, we can no longer rely on linear economic systems in global supply chains that waste resources and even reward waste generation. In particular, linear production systems are not suitable for emerging economies to catch up.

Circular economy models offer solutions to many of the pressing environmental challenges of our time, such as climate change, biodiversity loss, and maritime pollution. The circular economy also has a strong economic and social value with the potential to lower the pressure on scarce resources, strengthen local and regional economies, and create new forms of qualified employment.

The panel sought to display the opportunities and challenges of mainstreaming the circular economy globally and particularly in the Global South.
