Revisiting Digital Governance:
Online-Debate from 15 December 2020, 14h with
Christine Lambrecht, Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection
BERLIN, 08.12.2020 – The Global Solutions Initiative together with the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection has initiated a comprehensive discourse that aims at maintaining the benefits of the digital world while recoupling the technological advances with economic and social progress. We invite you to watch the second Solution Session on Revisiting Digital Governance from 15 December 2020, 14h, here.
“We need a political response so that not only online giants benefit from the internet, so that people are not lead into new dependencies, and so that extremists, misanthropists and opponents of democracy do not use the internet for their hateful messages with impunity. We need a political response that leads to more freedom, more justice, more social cohesion and more innovation in the digital space. The Revisiting Digital Governance event series, which is organized by the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection and the Global Solutions Initiative, serves this purpose,” says Christine Lambrecht, Federal Minister of Justice and Consumer Protection, who will open the second event.
In the following debate, Dennis J. Snower, President of the Global Solutions Initiative, Christian Kastrop, State Secretary at the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection, Anna Byhovskaya, Senior Policy Advisor to the Trade Union Advisory Committee to the OECD (TUAC) and Brigitte Acoca, Head of Consumer Policy Unit at the OECD, will discuss consumer protection and consumer rights in the digital world, new rules on Data Governance by the European Commission, the role of trade unions and consumer protection organizations in strengthening digital property rights as well as the responsibility of business to protect consumers online.
„We urgently need new rules of play for the digital realm. Consumers need adequate control over their own data. We need better protection from economic, social and political manipulation. We need to promote the revitalization of the Digital Single Market. Building on current EU regulation, we need to further develop our policies for the digital sphere, so we can preserve privacy and strengthen social cohesion. The EU agenda shows that it takes the existing large asymmetries in power and information very seriously. I look forward to continuing to work on concrete solutions together with the Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection”, says Dennis J. Snower, President of the Global Solutions Initiative.

About the event series Revisiting Digital Governance:
As part of its EU Council Presidency, Germany has set itself the goal of actively shaping current social and economic transformation processes. Digital transformation and its design for the common good and consumer-orientation in accordance with the sustainability goals of the United Nations’ Agenda 2030 is an essential focus topic.
In the area of justice and consumer protection, digitization and access to law, consumer policy and data economy as well as AI and intellectual property are among the main focuses. The public debate surrounding the protection of personal data during digitization was also reignited by the Corona crisis, making clear the extent to which consumers are concerned about the use of their personal data.
In this context, the Global Solutions Initiative together with the German Federal Ministry of Justice and Consumer Protection has initiated the Solution Sessions on Revisiting Digital Governance. In this online event series, decision-makers from politics, business, research and civil society discuss innovative concepts for pressing issues in the field of digital consumer protection, necessary consumer policies, new legal regulations and education initiatives to strengthen the protection of personal data.
